Competition and Joint Venture Between Cell Phone and Cable.

There are many attempts to combine cable and cell phones. AT & T fought hard to buy cable operators but failed. But the battles continue. The phone companies got more aggressive in rolling out their broadband DSL service to combat the cable companies' cable modem service, and they have gained market share mainly by competing on price. Then the cable companies fought back by introducing VoIP, whose Internet-based calling system competes directly with the phone companies' traditional telephony business. The cable companies, too, have seen success in winning new voice customers.

The phone companies, namely Verizon and SBC, have answered this challenge by spending billions of dollars to build new networks that will support television service, cable's traditional market. Now cable and telephone companies will go head-to-head in wireless, which, until now, has been dominated by the traditional telephone companies.

Two new joint ventures are noticeable:

Sprint and Other Cable Companies

If Sprint and the cable industry can succeed in executing on their convergence strategy, the biggest winner will be the consumer, which means cheaper and more convenient services.

In November 2005, Comcast, Time Warner, Cox Communcations and Advance/Newhouse Communications plan to bundle wireless phone service from the new alliance with their existing high-speed data, voice and video packages. A consortium of U.S. cable companies announced on Nov. 2, 2005 that they will form a joint venture with Sprint Nextel to offer mobile service to their customers.

It has been no secret that the cable companies have wanted to get into the wireless market. The cable companies will sell a co-branded wireless service through Sprint's retail stores and Radio Shack stores. The deal will be mutually exclusive for the next 20 years.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S), Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), Time Warner Cable -- a unit of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX), Cox Communications and Advance/Newhouse Communications announced they will form a joint venture that will accelerate the convergence of video entertainment, wireline and wireless data and communications products and services to the approximately 41 million customers currently served by four of the country's largest cable companies as well as to Sprint's nearly 46 million wireless subscribers. The venture has the potential to serve approximately 75 million homes currently passed by the cable companies.

The companies in the joint venture will work to develop converged next generation products for consumers that combine the best of cable's core products and interactive features with the vast potential of wireless technology to deliver services anywhere, any time. Leveraging the expertise, technical leadership and customer focus of Sprint and four of the largest, most successful cable and broadband communications companies will provide millions of customers access to the most advanced integrated entertainment, communications and wireless products available anywhere in the United States.

The companies also hinted strongly that they will take advantage of WiMAX wireless broadband, which Sprint is currently testing in the 2.5 GHz portion of the spectrum. They said they will investigate using that spectrum, "with the goal of further integrating wireline and wireless services."  WiMax and Wibro are new emerging wireless standards:

Cingular and Phone Companies

Cingular Wireless, which is owned by BellSouth Communications and SBC Communications, has dabbled in bundling services from its two parent companies. It has also tried integrating products from its parents with its own wireless service.

A few years ago, it introduced a cradle for Cingular cell phones that enabled customers who placed their cell phone in the cradle at home to accept cell calls on their landline phone. The idea was that people could reduce the number of cell minutes they used at home by having their cell phones ring on their wireline phones. The product never got much traction in the market. But a Cingular spokesman said the company hasn't given up on working with its parent company to develop integrated products. In fact, it is currently testing a dual-mode cellular-to-Wi-Fi service that is designed for business customers.

Players can engage in combat with other players or with monsters, complete quests, or increase their experience in any of the available skills. With the rising popularity of commercial MMORPG games came the desire from ardent players of these games to run their own servers beside the ones run by the game's creator. Since the original server software is not usually available, the behavior of the server has to be re-engineered. This can be done by analyzing the data stream with the original server, or by disassembling and analyzing the client which is available.

Ultima Online was one of the first large MMORPGs. Due to its openness in implementation, server emulators arose very quickly, even during the beta stage of development. The destination to which the client connects was changeable by simply editing a text file. In beta stage the client-server data stream was not encrypted yet. The term server emulator became known through Ultima Online server reimplementation such as UOX, which was the pioneer. Many forks and reimplementations followed UOX, because its source code was released under the GNU General Public License relatively early. RunUO is today the most widely used UO-server emulator. After RuneScape implemented anti-cheating measures, many gamers left and started their own private servers. The best place to discuss the private server is at Trik- The Master of Private Server.
